S1 E4: Animal Chat with Sam and Mark Green
Tuesday May 05, 2020
Tuesday May 05, 2020
In 2006, while Sam Green was visiting Sri Lanka, she came across a street dog that seemed minutes away from death. She wasn't able to walk away from the dog (who she later named, Mango) and instead, got to work contacting vets and animal experts and paying for the dog to receive the medical attention it needed.
That was the birth of what would become Dogstar Foundation. An organisation that, in the following 14 years, has become one of the most innovative, impactful and expertly run dog population management projects in the world today.
Sam and Mark chat to us about the traumatic events that took Sam to Sri Lanka in the first place, their desire to want to do more to help the dogs they saw suffering, how that led to them building an organisation, and some of the lessons they learned along the way.

S1 E2: Animal Chat with Tim Harrison

Thursday Apr 16, 2020
Exotic pet ownership is something that many people will have found out more about recently thanks to the new Netflix documentary series, Tiger King about roadside zoo owner, Joe Exotic and the increasingly bizarre cast of characters that inhabit this world.
Someone that knows more about this world than almost anyone is our guest on this Animal Chat podcast - Tim Harrison.
Tim Harrison is a retired police officer, firefighter and paramedic for the city of Oakwood, Ohio and was the central focus of the multi-award winning 2011 documentary, the elephant in the living room, is the Director of Outreach for Animals and is regarded as one of the world’s most well-known and well-respected advocates for the protection of dangerous captives animals.
In this podcast, Tim talks about his years on the frontline of dealing with the wildlife trade and mayhem of the exotic pet subculture of the United States, the elephant in the Living room film.
We, of course, discuss Joe Exotic and the Tiger King but we also find out that the world of exotic pet ownership is crazier that even that series suggests when Tim tells us about the markets and auctions where anything, literally anything can be bought and sold.
And then Tim talks about his incredible and tireless advocacy work. Not only educating the wider public but working directly with people who own these pets and getting them to see that maybe there’s a better way to care about animals than having them in your living room.
